Local attractions: There is lots to see and do in this part of France and the following is a selection of places to visit. • Mercantour National Park/Vallée des Merveilles: a rugged national park with excellent walks, streams and lakes set in the valleys of 3000 meter-high mountains. • the Vallée des Merveilles: famous for more than 100,000 rock engravings, largely from prehistoric times. • Chapel of Notre-Dame des Fontaines, renowned for its 1492 mural paintings by Canavesio. • Pretty hamlet of Morignole. • Fortified town of Tende with pretty Italian-style medieval architecture. • Col de Tende, one of hundreds of beautiful valleys in the region. A tunnel connects here to Italy and the ski resorts in Limone Piemonte. • The Musee de Merveilles. • Col de Sanson (12 kms) a mountain pass between Italy and France with spectacular views, can be reached from La Brigue by long hike or track (4W-drive recommended). • The beautiful medieval village of Saorge, said to be one of France’s most beautiful which is perched along a narrow rock spur that juts out into the Vallée de la Roya, high above the river. • Casterino, sitting in a magnificent valley along by a swift little river. • Other wonderful places a little over 15 kms to visit include: Breil-sur-Roya - 20 kms Sospel - 39 kms Ventimiglia (Italy) - 46 kms Cuneo (Italy) - 52 kms Menton - 56 kms Nice - 98 kms
Good places to visit: See Local Attractions above.
Annual Events: Events and Festivals Every July - Fête Médievale Every September - Fête de la Montagne Christmas - lights and numerous nativity scenes During much of the summer, Place de Nice is dominated by a large marquee, in which some of the festival events, dances and other activities take place.
Good places to eat: There is a very nice 'epicerie' opposite Les Alpes d'Azur, run by Cedric, which sells just about everything including fresh bagettes and croissants. There is another grocer nearby, an excellent butcher (who will deliver and take advance orders), a post office and several restaurants in La Brigue, including the ever-popular 'Pizzeria Brigasques'.
